Cannadian Bishops Issue Pastoral Letter on Human Trafficking

The Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace has issued a pastoral letter for Canadians on human trafficking within the context of the 2010 Olympic Games to be held in Vancouver February 12 to 28.


The pastoral letter examines the scourge of human trafficking, how human trafficking is possible and what Canadian Catholics can do out it.


The first step, the bishops say, is becoming aware of the problem, then to work with authorities in combatting this modern day form of slavery.

Pastoral Letter on Human Trafficking

The Catholic Bishops of British Columbia and the Yukon have published a Pastoral Letter on the trafficking of women and children.  The publication of this Letter coincided with the Vancouver launch of the CRC resource and awareness kit  described in the article below We are a Global Vlllage.  The event took place February 10 At Saint Patrick Regional High School with more than 80 students present.




Scarborough Human Trafficking Session a Success

Human trafficking was the focus of a one day workshop held September 23, 2009 at the Scarboro Foreign Missions offices in Scarborough, Ontario. It was attended by over 30 religious and associates.

A Lobbying Guide to the Laws Relative to Trafficking in Women and Children

The Canadian Religious Conference, as a member of a committee working towards the eradication of trafficking in women and children, has prepared a document on lobbying. This document is a tool offered primarily to women and men religious (sisters, brothers and priests)who plan to meet with their federal M.P. as a group to raise his or her awareness of the issue of human trafficking and asking their M.P.to make an actual committment to advance this cause.

December 2 -- The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, December 2, marks the anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations of the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others. See Resolution 317 (IV) of December 2, 1949.

The Canadian Religious Conference invites you to join in prayer to highlight this day. To help keep you mindful of the very sad plight of the victims of trafficking, the people involved in this awful trade as well as all those who can do something to stop it, we suggest the following elements for a celebration.

We hope that this celebration will be a way to unite with the many numerous persons, communities and organizations involved in the fight against this form of modern slavery, known as trafficking in persons.

Human Trafficking: Global, National and Local Responses

Renowned expert and international activist, Sister Eugenia Bonetti of Rome, Italy, gave a public address in Ottawa on November 1, 2006 about the global reality of human trafficking. An Italian Consolata Missionary Sister, Sr. Bonetti coordinates the operations of 100 small shelters throughout Italy, dealing with the rehabilitation, social reintegration and protection of victims of human trafficking.
