Congregation of Christian Brothers

Toronto; present in 26 countries

History: Founded in Waterford, Ireland, in 1802 by Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice, the Congregation of Christian Brothers ministers in Christian education and to people at the margins in some 26 countries throughout the world. Mission: The congregation is committed to Christian education and to prophetic action on behalf of the materially poor. The brothers have committed themselves to following the four directions, established by a recent Congregation Chapter (Johannesburg, South Africa): (1) to pledge themselve to internationality; (2) to move to ministry with people at the margins; (3) to acknowledge and share their brokenness and fragility and claim the growth that God's healing brings to them; (4) to acclaim the Edmund Rice Family as a gift for the Church and the world, and to work in partnership with all authentic expression of Edmund's charism.
